ASUS X72D/K72DR: Three Cores, No Waiting

Up to this point, our experiences with AMD's Phenom II mobile line haven't been very favorable. In the desktop world AMD's chips can compete and succeed based on price, but in notebooks thermal properties get added to the mix. Intel's been very aggressive about controlling the mobile market, but is AMD's "we'll sell you more cores for less" strategy going to translate well? On hand is the ASUS X72D, an entry-level desktop replacement notebook designed for media enthusiasts. Hybrid Clouds: are we there yet?

Just 9 months ago, almost 1500 out of a total of 3146 readers (46%) told us in a poll that they feel that "Cloud Computing is hot air, it will blow over". And that is understandable given the confusing buzz surrounding the "Cloud".

Don't worry, this article is not about philosophizing about the "Cloud Computing" hype. That is definitely not the Anandtech way. We will focus on the infrastructure part, the part that we know best. We visited VMworld Europe 2010 in Kopenhagen just a few days ago. Talking to a lot of different vendors in a few days made the light shine brighter through the clouds. Think Cloud Computing is crazy rambling? Meet the hybrid cloud with VM teleportation, extremely stretched virtual networks and unified communications...

But we should not forget that most Anandtech readers are still hardware enthusiasts. Why should you care about "fluffy" cloud computing? Let us give you a crash course before we dive into the underlying technology.

The T-Mobile G2 Preview

T-Mobile’s G2, the long awaited successor to the G1, is finally here. This is a pretty big launch for T-Mobile, probably the biggest since the original G1. The G2 is really the first high end HTC device hitting an American GSM network since the Nexus One, so it’s a pretty big deal (the HD2, in its blaze of WM 6.5 glory, doesn’t count). The G2 is basically the European-market HTC Desire Z, except with twice the internal NAND and a stock version of Froyo instead of the Sense UI-infused build running on the Desire. We got ours last night, and we can now bring you some preliminary impressions and benchmarks.

AMD?s Radeon HD 6870 & 6850: Renewing Competition in the Mid-Range Market

All things considered, the Radeon HD 5000 series has gone very well for AMD. When they launched it just over a year ago, they beat NVIDIA to the punch by nearly 6 months and enjoyed a solid term as the kings of the GPU world, with halo parts like the 5870 and 5970 giving them renewed exposure at the high-end of the market while mainstream products like the 5670 redefining the HTPC.  Ultimately all good things come to an end though, and as NVIDIA has launched the GeForce 400 series AMD has needed to give up the single-GPU halo and lower prices in order to remain competitive.

But if spring is a period of renewal for NVIDIA, then it’s fall that’s AMD’s chance for renewal. Long before Cypress and the 5000 series even launched, AMD’s engineers had been hard at work at what would follow Cypress. Now a year after Cypress we get to meet the first GPU of the next Radeon family: Barts. With it comes the Radeon HD 6800 series, the culmination of what AMD has learned since designing and launching the 5800 series. AMD may not have a new process to produce chips on this year, but as we’ll see they definitely haven’t run out of ideas or ways to improve their efficiency on the 40nm process.

Your Feedback On The Use of EVGA's GeForce GTX 460 FTW in Last Night's Review

Last night we published our Radeon HD 6870 and 6850 review. In it we made a decision to include a factory overclocked GeForce GTX 460 from EVGA (the EVGA GeForce GTX 460 FTW). For those who aren't aware, NVIDIA has allowed a number of its partners to ship GTX 460s at higher than stock clock speeds. A practice that has been done in the past. The cards are available in retail with full warranties.

A number of you responded in the comments to the article very upset that we included the EVGA card. Even going as far to accuse us of caving to NVIDIA's pressure and demands. Ryan and I both felt it was necessary to address this front and center rather than keep the discussion in the comments.

AVADirect Clevo X7200: Six Cores, SSD RAID, and GTX 480M SLI Yields World's Fastest DTR Notebook

The march of progress is inevitable, with faster computers constantly replacing last year's top performing parts. Clevo is a company with a heavy focus on Desktop Replacement (DTR) notebooks, often at the forefront of the latest performance enhancing parts. AVADirect is one of a few vendors that sells Clevo notebooks, letting customers choose the various components. In the past, Clevo has had notebooks with desktop CPUs and a reasonably fast mobile GPU, or mobile CPUs with two GPUs; the X7200 combines the two and offers up to hex-core i7-980X CPU support with GTX 480M SLI graphics to provide what is easily the fastest notebook we've ever tested--with a "UPS battery" to match.

Given the high-end nature of the CPU and GPU options, we asked AVADirect to send us a no-holds-barred system for testing, and that's exactly what we got. Take Intel's fastest i7-980X CPU and add in 480M SLI with a couple of SSDs in RAID 0, and watch the mobile benchmark records topple one by one. If you want the (currently) fastest notebook on the block and are willing to pay the piper, meet the latest heavyweight champion of the world. We’ve got one of the very first review units to hit the streets, and we’re going to see what this bad boy can do. Ladies and gentlemen, let's get ready to rummmmble!

Western Digital Introduces new USB 3.0 External Drives, Hits 3TB

Although Seagate was first to market with an external 3TB drive, it wasn’t without issues. In our testing of the 3TB GoFlex Desk we found that under continuous usage the drive got very hot - we measured temperatures as high as 69C after only a few hours of file copies. Ultimately we concluded that the chassis simply wasn’t suited for the drive Seagate supplied. Today, we have an alternative.

Western Digital is announcing an updated lineup of USB 3.0 enabled external hard drives: the My Passport Essential, My Passport Essential SE and My Book Essential. The specs are below:

Western Digital External USB 3.0 Drive Comparison

Drive

Internal Drive

Interface

Capacities

Pricing

My Passport Essential

2.5"

USB 3.0

500GB

$99.99

My Passport Essential SE

2.5"

USB 3.0

750GB, 1TB

$129.99, $169.99

My Book Essential

3.5"

USB 3.0

1TB - 3TB

$129.99 - $249.99

The 3TB My Book Essential is priced identically to Seagate’s 3TB GoFlex Desk, however the Seagate drive having been out in the market for longer is now available at lower prices. The bigger question is whether or not the My Book Essential chassis can keep WD’s 3TB drive running cooler than the GoFlex Desk.

Internally the 3TB My Book Essential uses a WD Caviar Green drive. We'll see a standalone drive available "shortly" according to WD. I'm guessing as a green drive it probably spins at 5400RPM, which should help tremendously with heat. We’ve asked Western Digital for a review sample and we’ll post our findings as soon as we can get our hands on one.

You can check out pics of all three new USB 3.0 drives in our gallery here.

Toshiba A665-3DV: 3D or Not 3D?

Last month we had our first look at AMD's latest Danube platform with a quad-core P920 processor in the Toshiba A660D. After we posted that review, Toshiba asked us if we'd be interested in reviewing their Intel version of the notebook, with the upgrade to NVIDIA's 3D Vision coming along for the ride. Never one to turn down a review opportunity, particularly for a technological curiosity like mobile 3D Vision, we readily agreed. So today, we have a faster, significantly more expensive version of the A66x chassis, with 3D Blu-ray support and a 120Hz LCD.

There's plenty to look at, but before we get to the review and benchmarks let's make it clear: Toshiba is billing this as a 3D multimedia laptop as opposed to a 3D gaming laptop. We'll see exactly why later in the review, but it's probably no surprise to state right now that the GTS 350M GPU driving the graphics isn't intended to do the heavy lifting involved in 3D Vision. It's still plenty fast for regular gaming, however, and with the marketing push behind 3D—3D movies, 3D HDTVs, 3D cameras, and 3D laptops—we're certainly interested to see how compelling the A665-3DV is when it comes to providing visual depth. Is this the next frontier or another gimmick? Let's find out.

The Apple TV (2010) Review

The new Apple TV is a lot like the old Apple TV, at least functionally. You get the same limitations and the same plays-well-with-others* behavior (if by others you mean Apple products and iTunes). Technically, the new Apple TV is a significant improvement over the original - it doesn’t get stupidly hot, it’s very compact and it’s a lot cheaper.

But Apple has to compete with more than itself in this field. The Boxee Box and Google TV are both due to arrive later this year. Not to mention the many other devices that already do much of what Apple promises with the new ATV.

OCZ's Fastest SSD, The IBIS and HSDL Interface Reviewed

Earlier this year OCZ announced its intention to bring a new high speed SSD interface to the market. Frustrated with the slow progress of SATA interface speeds, OCZ wanted to introduce an interface that would allow greater performance scaling today. Dubbed the High Speed Data Link (HSDL), OCZ’s new interface delivers 2 - 4GB/s (that’s right, gigabytes) of bi-directional bandwidth to a single SSD. It’s an absolutely absurd amount of bandwidth, definitely more than a single controller can feed today - which is why the first SSD to support it will be a multi-controller device with internal RAID.

Instead of relying on a SATA controller on your motherboard, HSDL SSDs feature a 4-lane PCIe SATA controller on the drive itself. HSDL is essentially a PCIe cable standard that uses a standard SAS cable to carry a 4 PCIe lanes between a SSD and your motherboard. On the system side you’ll just need a dumb card with some amount of logic to grab the cable and fan the signals out to a PCIe slot.

The first SSD to use HDSL is the OCZ IBIS. As the spiritual successor to the Colossus, the IBIS incorporates four SandForce SF-1200 controllers in a single 3.5” chassis. And it's fast. We've measured speeds at up to 800MB/s for a single IBIS and OCZ wants to eventually enable configurations of four IBIS drives. Read on for our full review of the IBIS drive and its technology.

NVIDIA's GeForce GT 430: The Next HTPC King?

It’s been 7 months since the launch of the first Fermi cards, and at long last we’re here: we’ve reached the end of the road on the Fermi launch. Today NVIDIA is launching the final GPU in the first-generation Fermi stack into the add-in card market, launching the GeForce GT 430 and the GF108 GPU that powers it. After months of launches and quite a bit of anticipation we have the complete picture of Fermi, from the massive GTX 480 to today’s tiny GT 430.

For the GT 430, NVIDIA is taking an interesting position. AMD and NVIDIA like to talk up their cheaper cards’ capabilities in HTPC environments but this is normally in the guise of an added feature. Rarely do we see a card launched on one or two features and today is one of those launches. NVIDIA believes that they’ve made the ultimate HTPC card, and that’s the line they’re going to be using to sell it; gamers need not apply. So just what is NVIDIA up to, and do they really have the new king of the HTPC cards? Let’s find out.

All the cool kids are doing it these days, yes it?s 802.11N! We have the need for speed and N is pretty much officially here, but many of our products don?t have N built-into them unless they?re fairly new. My netbook is only a year old, but it doesn?t have N in it, so I [...]

A Quick Glimpse of the Biostar TP67XE and TH67XE

With Intel’s new socket 1155 and Sandy Bridge archtecture nearly upon us, it was only a matter of time before motherboard vendors started to release promotional shots of their offerings.  We saw a few pre-production boards at Computex, enough to wet the appetite, but nothing set in stone. Now however, some high-resolution images of final production boards have fallen into our lap in the the form of their TP67XE and TH67HE offerings.

NVIDIA GTC 2010 Wrapup

Today we’re wrapping up our coverage of last month’s NVIDIA GPU Technology Conference, including the show’s exhibit hall.  We came to GTC to get a better grasp on just where things are for NVIDIA's still-fledging GPU compute efforts along with the wider industry as a whole, and we didn’t leave disappointed. Besides seeing some interesting demos – including the closest thing you’ll see to a holodeck in 2010 – we had a chance to talk to Adobe, Microsoft, Cyberlink, and others about where they see GPU computing going in the next couple of years. The GPU-centric future as NVIDIA envisioned it may be taking a bit longer than we hoped, but it looks like we may finally be turning the corner on when GPU computing breaks in to more than just the High Performance Computing space.

Read on for our full review of the Apple TV.

NVIDIA Launches Quadro 2000 & Quadro 600

This morning NVIDIA is announcing the rest of its Fermi-based Quadro family: the Quadro 2000 and the Quadro 600. Based on the GF106 and GF108 GPUs respectively, the 2000 and the 600 flesh out NVIDIA’s Quadro line for the mid-range and entry markets, focusing on Quadro’s traditional strengths in the professional graphics & CAD markets, and more recently on CUDA-accelerated professional applications. For these applications the new Fermi based Quadros should provide significantly more compute and geometry capabilities than the FX-series Quadros they replace.

The Apple TV (2010): Dissected

Honestly, Roku's price drop and yesterday's announcement of Hulu Plus coming to the platform probably stole much if any remaining thunder from the imminent arrival of the new Apple TV. While we'll still give the Apple TV a thorough treatment, it's still clearly a very niche product from Apple (until it gets jailbroken, then all bets are off). It's one of the easiest devices to test simply because it doesn't work with the vast majority of downloadable video content. We can't even run our media streamer test suite on the device since it doesn't  support streaming anything outside of iTunes.

To tide you over until our review is done however we've got a full gallery of the new Apple TV dissected. There aren't many surprises installed. The thing is tiny, there are no fans and the entire chassis is used as a heatsink. Apple makes liberal use of thermal conductive pads within the device.

The new ATV does use the A4, but the markings on the chip in my unit are very faint so I couldn't tell how much memory was integrated onto the package. There don't seem to be many other surprises inside, the new Apple TV is a $99 iPod Touch without the display and speaker/mic. The real potential for this platform (much like its predecessor) is realized if/when it's hacked. Until then it'll be a tough sell for many. Update: Looks like it has already been jailbroken (thanks crimson117), it's just a matter of time for folks to put the freedom to good use.

Apple 27-inch LED Cinema Display Review

I've wanted a higher density, more compact alternative to the 30-inch 2560 x 1600 panels that I've seen for the past 6 years. Apple was the first to intrigue me with the 27-inch iMac, however I didn't need another computer, I just wanted a monitor. Earlier this year we reviewed Dell's U2711, a 27-inch CCFL backlit LCD display with a 2560 x 1440 resolution and loved it.

Recently Apple presented us with an alternative. An LED backlit, 27-inch Cinema Display similar to what's used in the new iMac but without the Mac part. Priced at $999 it's actually $100 cheaper than the Dell, but lacks the input flexibility of the U2711. What Apple does give you is an integrated MagSafe power adapter useful for charging your MacBook Pro in a very sleek package. But how well does it do as a monitor? Read on for our full review.

A Favor, Share your AnandTech Stories

I've been out in California for the past week for IDF, followed by some extra meetings with the usual suspects: AMD, Intel and NVIDIA. The information I gained from these meetings will show up in articles over the next few weeks, months and even years. I really enjoyed covering the show this year not only because of the information we had access to but also because of the new team members I was able to cover it with. This was the first IDF for both Brian and Vivek. AMD even made this IDF an awesome experience by giving us great access to Zacate after our initial encounter. I have to say that for the first time in a while I'm actually looking forward to the next tradeshow.

For those of you who don't know, I don't employ any sales people at AnandTech. The company is strictly editorial. We have an exclusive advertising partner who handles all sales/marketing for the site. We own no share in them, and they own no share in us. While out here I met with our advertising agency who came to me with a request. They have a potential advertiser that wanted to know if we had any success stories from our readers to share with them. They are looking for stories about how reading something on AnandTech impacted you, particularly with regards to enterprise hardware/software decisions. While the request was for enterprise stories, I'm interested to hear them all if you've got one. Again what I'm looking for is a story about how something you read here impacted you or your hardware/software decisions in any way.

The stories will be shared with the potential advertiser so be sure to leave out any information that you don't want public. They are simply looking for more anecdotal evidence of the impact of AnandTech. I don't like asking for favors, but if you do have a story to share I'd appreciate it.

I'm back in the office next week, have a great weekend!

Motorola Droid 2 Review: Rebooting the Droid

The launch of the first Motorola Droid was a watershed moment for the Android platform and Motorola alike. The original Droid’s masculine and modern industrial design showed the world that the nearly-finished handset maker hadn’t lost the ability to craft sexy hardware, and Android’s 2.0 release brought a host of new features and polish.

The original Droid has weathered its time as Verizon’s flagship Android device rather well, receiving relatively timely updates from Motorola which has brought it to 2.0.1, 2.1, and now 2.2. Though Motorola nailed the industrial design aesthetics, the hardware’s SoC is starting to feel dated, and the device itself has begun to show its age next to competition from HTC. The original Droid’s keyboard also was a subject of intense criticism, with Motorola itself silently updating the keyboard design midway through the Droid’s lifespan.

There isn’t a lot for Motorola to change, but it’s undoubtedly time for a platform update. We’ve been playing around with it for a while now, and here it is—the Droid 2.
